"Marrying" Nature with Nanotechnology - Singapore Science Festival 2015

  • Suntec Convention & Exhibition Centre 1 Raffles Blvd Singapore, 039593 Singapore (map)

Many biological species in nature are endowed with unique surfaces that provide them with survival ability.

For example, the beautiful rose petal has a strong water adhesive surface so that dewdrops pinned on the petal and serve to magnify the flowers's beauty; this unique characteristic helps the flower to attract insects for pollination purpose.

The unique characteristics of the surface textures found in the nature can be mimicked onto synthetic materials. By doing so, the surface textures will result in new material performances while preserving the chemical nature of the material, and without adding new chemical to the material.

Biomimicry, thus provided a potentially sustainable approach for new development.
