Science Cafe is back for the month of October, this time being organised by the Institute for Medical Biology.

The highlight is a talk by Professor Artur Schmidtchen, a Professor of Dermatology and Skin Biology in Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. He will be talking about the causes of non-healing leg ulcers and clinical challenges.

Chronic wounds of the legs represent a major health problem in the older population and an increasing burden to health care providers. The ulcers which affect 0.2-0.3% of the population, have various underlying causes, such as venous or arterial insufficiency, diabetes, vasculitis, or excessive pressure. Trends in the structure of the population over the next 20 years are likely to lead to a significant increase in the number of patients with chronic wounds. Today, there is an unmet need for new treatments for chronic wounds. In my talk I will review the causes of non-healing ulcers and clinical challenges concerning this patient group.
