Every year in the Kalahari as the dry season tightens its grip thousands of hungry animals make their way to the last remaining patches of grassland. The Savuti Marsh, with its permanent water is soon packed with game. For the lions, this is feast-time. But Savuti has just been through its worst drought in three decades. When the grass ran out, the grazers moved on. Only the elephants stayed, prisoners of their need for water. This left the cats with a dilemma. If they were going to eat, they needed to rewrite the rules – they needed to hunt elephants.

A follow up to Africa’s Giant Killers, this film returns to the (lion) pride as a catalogue of dramatic events unfolds. The pride males turn against each other; an inexperienced mum puts her newborn cubs in mortal danger; a rival group of lions challenge the pride for its territory and when lightning strikes, fires burn day and night.

When the dust eventually settles the pride is left with only one choice, to face their old foe, the elephants, or risk starvation.

The final showdown awaits.

BBC Earth is on Starhub Channel 407.
