With hundreds of millions of followers worldwide, Buddhism is one of the world's great religions -yet relatively little is known about its early history.
One of the holiest sites in the religion is at Lumbini, long believed to be the actual birthplace of the Buddha and the only site connected to his life that hasn't been destroyed or covered completely. In "Buried Secrets of the Buddha," Dr. Robin Coningham and an international team of archaeologists have been granted special access to dig at this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
They'll work to solve some of the biggest mysteries about the first days of Buddhism, including when exactly the Buddha lived and whether the story of his birth at Lumbini has historical basis. The answers they uncover could reshape the history of one of the world's major religions.
