BTS 056: The Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela
In the first installment of the "Amazing Carved Structures" Arc, religion was the motivation behind the building of the largest stone Buddha in the world, one that is carved into the cliff face.
The churches of Lalibela has motivations of a similar nature, but rather than going for the surface, the people of one of the earliest adoptors of Christianity dug into the Earth to form these incredible rock cut architectures from within.
These churches were made not with mud, wood nor cement, but from the living rock in which the churches were carved from.
When they were completed, the rock-hewn Churches became 'New Jerusalem', a sacred land in the heart of Ethiopia, and a unique architecture found nowhere else on Earth.
