BTS 053: Robot Shows Signs of Basic Self Consciousness
As our technology constantly breaks new barriers and pushes for new frontiers, the rise of artificial intelligent robots are fast becoming a reality. And with that, an equally increasing fear that the scenes of Terminator may become reality. This is something that even Elon Musk is concerned about!
If you share equal concern, then the video below, showcasing a robot that had been programmed to show some basic form of self-awareness may have you start to sweat a little.
In a simple test, three Nao Bots are programmed to think that their two other companions had been given a "dumping pill" that would make them unable to speak. All three were then asked which two were given the pills.
One of the Nao Bots that did not receive the "dumbing pill" responded "I don't know", an action only he can do as the other two could no longer speak. But after hearing its own voice, he "reasoned" that he was did not receive the pill and promptly responded, "Sorry, I know now. I was able to prove that I was not given a dumbing pill."
What this desmonstrates was that through programming, self-awareness can be replicated. Of course, this test is rather limited in its scope, but it does give us a peak of what the future can be.
